I've always wanted to share this with everyone. I know some of you have this book, but I think not all of you are aware of this table. It's interesting.

General investigations for a patient with suspected infection

Full Blood Count

Neutrophilia
Bacterial infection
Neutropenia
Viral infection
Brucellosis
Typhoid
Thyphus
Overwhelming sepsis
Lymphocytosis
Viral infection
Lymphopenia
HIV infection (not specific)
Atypical lymphocytes
Infectious mononucleosis
Eosinophilia
Invasive parasitic infection
Thrombocytopenia
Overwhelming sepsis
Malaria
ESR or C-reactive protein
Elevated in all
Urea and electrolytes
Potentially deranged in severe illness from any cause


Liver enzymes

Minor elevation of transferases
Non-specific feature of many infections
Mild viral hepatitis (LOL)
High transferases, elevated bilirubin
Viral hepatitis (usually A, B or E)
Coagulation
May be deranged in hepatitis, and in overwhelming infection of any type
